If You’re Tempted to go on a New Year’s Diet…

If you’re tempted to start another diet this January, you’re certainly not alone! Diets are BIG business around the new year and the push to lose weight is everywhere it seems like. It can be very easy to get swept up (again) in the wishful desire to finally become the version of yourself you always dreamed of being.

This time will be different, you might be promising yourself.

But before you go down that path, I encourage you to consider a few things. First, take a few minutes to consider your history with dieting.

How many times have you tried to lose weight?
How long did the weight loss last?
Did you actually gain extra weight back after awhile?

If your track record is failed diets with additional weight gain, your experience is totally in line with most people’s experiences. That means, you didn’t fail at dieting… diets fail us. And the evidence proves it. The exceptions are mostly people with eating disorders, and if that’s you, I really hope you’ll work on (or keep working on) recovery this year. 💙

Next, I want you to consider what your REAL goals are. We often think it’s about weight loss when it’s really about wanting something deeper, like wanting to be healthier, have more self-esteem, or be more physically comfortable. All of which are valid goals. The problem is that we often believe we have to lose weight to achieve these things, but…. do we really?

Because health is not reserved for thin people (nor is it always achievable because there are so many factors outside our control *ahem* genetics).

Feeling good about yourself at any size IS possible.

And there are are ways to improve your physical comfort with losing weight.

These are just examples of the real goals you might have, and it’s definitely worth exploring what yours are. (An anti-diet coach can be helpful in that, so don’t be afraid to reach out for some support!)

Bottom line: I hope you’ll consider doing something different than starting another diet or continuing to diet this next new year.

This could be the year that, instead of punishing and depriving yourself, you put all that energy into accepting your body and taking care of yourself in ways that feel good. Whatever you do, I wish you a happy 2022, and I’m sending you all my love and support!
